Public Relations in Sports

Beckham, Woods, Williams, Armstrong and Federer most of us would know the first names for all these people.

Their names are synonymous with sport and success.

They have huge pay checks, along with million dollar endorsement deals, and the lifestyle we all envy.

Which says one thing their Public Relations Companies are doing brilliant jobs.

Sports has always been around since prehistoric times, where a hunter would compete with who could run faster and throw a spear more accurately than another member of their tribe.

And then in 776 BC, to honour Zeus, athletes from all over gathered in Olympia to test speed, strength and skill in the first Olympic Games.

Although, sports these days has changed, with sometimes multi-million dollar contracts, prize money, and endorsements that would be large enough for most families to retire on, the world of sports has grown into an estimated $500 billion industry.

And with recent events with such stars as Tiger Woods, Michael Phelps, and A-Rod, the importance of a Public Relations in Sports, who can not only see you through the good but also the bad, is essential.

What has changed the most in sports is the branding and also where the factor of sport and celebrity overlap. There are still sports people out there who need to survive though off seasons, working normal jobs, and others who can live just on their earnings from their chosen sports and sponsorships.

These days sports has grown into a major international business, while also becoming a key structure in globalised society. It is something that brings people together, from town to town, state to state, country to country.

It also involves business communication, through business to business, financial, communications with employees and consumers.
Along with that it also involves such things as cultural and political communication.

Along with the promotion of the sports stars themselves the industry now involves clothing, footwear, equipment, fashion and also niche suppliers. Important functions of Public Relations specialists, is Internal and external corporate social responsibility.

While also on a different scale, the promotion of events worldwide, and holidays to targeted markets, who offer sports facilities on a range of levels. These are only a tiny sample of the functions.

There are also many grades of sports so the need for Public Relations will differ. But when looking at more professional athletes, social networking sites fan pages can be set up for fans, where more personal details about the athlete can be shared. This gives the fan more interaction with the athlete and enables them to feel closer.

With many big name stars they will not have to access the social networking sites themselves and update status’ or other details, as this would be handled by their PR specialist. But many athletes choose to interact with their fans, as they like the feedback and honesty they receive from them.

While the social websites are a great marketing tool for many, having a personal web-page also offers a more detailed look at the athlete and gives them the ability to offer a lot more personal details, pictures, video and other media to it’s viewer.
It also gives the factual details for other media outlets to view and report the correct details.

Another important part of a Public Relations in Sports, is to offer athletes the chance to train in talking and interacting with the media. As the sport industry grows so does the interest. Therefore athletes who are not appropriately trained in media relations, can sometimes be more detrimental to themselves then good.

So as you can see the importance of a Public Relations firm in any sport related field is essential, for the up and coming sports it can gain exposure and maybe gain sponsorships. And for the well knows it can continue to offer guidance, assistance and also crisis management.
